With a semi-strict regulation of how a Muslim should dress, the Koran also outlines some of the specific cosmetic rules with how women specifically can present themselves. Most of these prohibitions stem from the idea that certain changes would alter the creation (man) of Allah and thus is disrespectful. However, there is not complete restriction of freedom as there are certain ways that members of the Islamic faith can express themselves while still being obedient to the teachings of Islam.
NAILS/NAIL POLISHTeachings of Islam instruct its followers to keep nails trimmed short in order to avoid animalistic appearances and maintain cleanliness. Though it is not completely outlawed in the Koran, nail polish is frowned upon and not recommended for Muslim use. Since there is such great importance in washing oneself before prayer, this nail adhesive may be seen as a barrier from the water from effectively purifying all parts of the individual. It should be noted however that some nail polish brands have incorporated new formulas to allow for more water permeability. Taking this into consideration, wuhdu would be able to fully cleanse one's hands in this instance and thus this would permit the wearing of this type of nail polish.

With this area specifically, most of the usage depends on the motivations of the woman who wears it. For example, according to Islam teachings, a woman should not wear makeup unless she is doing so for her husband and not for her own personal benefit. That said, eyeliner is permitted as Muhammad wore it and thus is considered acceptable to wear in front of one's husband. Fake eyelashes are prohibited since they change the original part of the body and alters what Allah created. It should also be noted that bright colored pigments are not permitted due to its effect in taking away from one's "natural beauty".

PERFUME/COLOGNE
Regarding the topic of perfume in the Muslim world, it is solely dependent upon the locations of which the woman travels while wearing the scent. If she is to go to the mosque that day, a woman is not permitted to wear perfume.
Otherwise, it is permissible to wear perfume as The Prophet (pbuh) is said to have thought positively about the substance. In lightly perfuming one's body, it can be argued that this act is done to enhance and promote one's cleanliness and thus is a righteous act to Allah. This idea also goes the same for men with cologne! |
"He who perfumes himself for Allah, most High, will be raised on the Day of Resurrection, smelling more fragrant than sweet musk, whereas he who perfumes himself for other than Allah will be raised on the Day of Resurrection smelling more putrid than a corpse."
